NORFOLK, Va. – Yulia Starodubtseva (Kakhovka, Ukraine) of the Old Dominion women's tennis team was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Wednesday afternoon, as voted on and announced by league officials. All weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Starodubtseva went a perfect 3-0 last week, highlighted by defeating LSU's No. 61 nationally ranked Safiya Carrington (6-3, 4-6, 6-0) to help lift Old Dominion to a 5-2 victory over LSU [RV] in Baton Rouge. Against Dartmouth, No. 8 Starodubtseva/Alesya Yakubovich clinched the doubles point on Court No. 1 for the Monarchs. In singles against Dartmouth, No. 107 Starodubtseva took down Racquel Lyn, who was a First Team All-Ivy League selection for singles last year, in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to help lift ODU to a 7-0 win.
Starodubtseva and the Monarchs are now 6-1 on the season with their only loss coming to No. 2 nationally ranked North Carolina.
Old Dominion will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Monarchs take on Wichita State (1-3) in Columbia, Mo.
