CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Old Dominion (22-4, 12-2 C-USA) women's basketball team had its 11 game win streak snapped by Charlotte (18-7, 9-5 C-USA) on the road by a 63-59 final score. The game was close throughout, but the 49ers nine field goals in the third quarter was enough to propel them ahead through the finish.
Senior Taylor Edwards recorded a career-high 29 points, going 12-for-18 from the field.
"I thought our kids battled. A resilient group. We're turning a page," said head coach Nikki McCray. "We talked about rebounding and taking care of the ball. Those are two areas we didn't do well. They were beating us on the boards and that's what won the game."
ODU opened to a dominant first quarter. At one point leading 14-1 with less than five minutes to go. Charlotte responded with a 9-0 scoring run to close out the period. At the end of the first, ODU led the game, 16-13. The 49ers took the momentum from the final two minutes of the first frame into the second quarter, outscoring ODU, 16-15. The 49ers began the second half with a 12-5 run to grab a 43-34 advantage with 4:16 left in the third quarter. The Monarch deficit got as high as 10 in the quarter before two Victoria Morris free throws sent ODU into the fourth trailing by eight. In the third, Charlotte went nine-for-14 from the field, while ODU shot 20 percent going three-of-15. The Monarchs responded in the fourth with a 6-2 run to open the quarter and get within one possession of the 49ers with 4:48 on the clock.
