HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Dominic Manilla, the Old Dominion women's tennis head coach, has been named Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Member of the Year for the State. This award is presented to a member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR.
In the midst of his 9th season at Old Dominion with a 123-61 record, Coach Manilla continues to deliver success to the women's program. In the 2018-19 season, Manilla earned his 100th career victory as a head coach and brought the program to its highest ever ranking ITA National Ranking of #19, as well as an at large bid to the NCAA tournament. For his efforts, Manilla was named the 2018 and 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, the 2019 Conference USA Coach of the Year, and the 2018 and 2019 VaSID State Coach of the Year. He has guided a multitude of players to All-Conference first and second team honors and national rankings.
In addition to his success on the court, Manilla's teams have excelled in the classroom. Each year since 2014, more than half his team has been awarded the highest academic achievements and has been honored numerous times as an ITA All-Academic Team. Recently Manilla's entire squad was named to the ODU Dean's list.
An ODU graduate and former men's tennis player, Manilla spent a year coaching at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, working closely with McEnroe, and former top ATP players Gilad Bloom and Fritz Buehning.
Manilla grew up in a tennis family. His father, Ron Manilla is an ATP and WTA Tournament Director, US Special Olympic National Coach and PTR International Master Professional. Recently, the elder Manilla was elected to serve on the PTR Board of Directors.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 131 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
