PALM CITY, Fla. – After two rounds at the Martin Downs Collegiate, the Old Dominion men's golf team sits in fifth place after shooting a 289 on Saturday morning.
Two Monarchs finished under par in day two, as senior Carter Morgan and junior Rasmus Konradsson each went into the clubhouse with a 1-under 71 on their scorecards after their second 18 holes. Konradsson had six birdies on the day while Morgan had four. Morgan is currently tied for 18th on the player leaderboard after back-to-back 1-under par performances, while Konradsson is in a tie for 22nd, just one stroke behind Morgan after the two rounds.
After shooting a 66 in the first round, Gustav Fransson, birdied six holes and bogeyed six others to shoot an even 72 on Saturday. The Monarch junior still holds a top-10 spot on the leaderboard with a -6, tied for ninth place.
Freshman Filip Wetterqvist had two eagles on Saturday, getting the ball in the cup on three strokes on both the par-5 eighth hole and the par-5 13th hole. He added two birdies in the round, but he couldn't find any consistency, bogeying seven holes and taking a double-bogey on hole 16. He finished with a 75 and is 1-under for the tournament, tied with Konradsson at 22nd.
Chris Ayers struggled again in round two, shooting a 9-over par. Senior Doug Rios-Ceballos, golfing as an independent, finished his day with a 4-over 76, placing him in a tie for 43rd in the field of 94 golfers.
The Monarchs entered round two in third place, but both Samford and South Dakota jumped ODU on the team leaderboard with 4-under showings. Host UNC Greensboro holds the lead with a total of 541, followed by No. 49 James Madison at 546. Samford's 562 total is only four strokes better than fifth-place ODU's.
UNCG golfers hold the top-three spots on the player leaderboard, with No. 8 Jonathan Brightwell leading the way with a 13-under par after two rounds.
Round three will begin on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Monarch golfers will be paired with golfers from Elon, Drexel and Seton Hall.
