WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Notching their third-straight win, the Old Dominion (6-1) women's basketball team took down William & Mary (6-2) on the road Thursday night, 69-58. Sophomore Mariah Adams matched her career-high 13 points, going six-for-six from the free throw line.
"I was surprised by our turnovers and we need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball, said head coach Nikki McCray. "We have to be better as a team, individually as well."
The Monarchs outscored William & Mary by 10 to open the first quarter. Sophomore Ajah Wayne scored eight of those 10 points. In that 10 minutes of play, ODU scored two, three-pointers, shooting 100% from that range.
In the second quarter, the Tribe scored 15 points, outscoring the Monarchs by five points. ODU struggled from the free throw line in that period, only going one-for-four. After going into the locker room with a 32-27 lead, ODU had a strong third quarter, led by Amari Young.
In the final quarter, scoring opened up for the Monarchs, at one point holding a 17-point lead with 4:57 left in the contest. Adams scored eight-fourth quarter points to propel ODU past the Tribe.
"We wanted to limit their points in the paint. Our guards did a tremendous job on number 10. She had 14 points but she had to work for those 14 points."
Overall, ODU had 39 points off the bench. Through the contest, the Monarchs led the entire time. Senior Ashley Scott recorded her second-straight game with six rebounds.
