No. 14 Sa'Derian Perry earned a top-10 win over No. 8 Grant Leeth of Missouri

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Old Dominion wrestling team (1-3, 1-1 MAC) lost against two top-20 wrestling teams on day one of the South Beach Duals, falling to Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe No. 20 Missouri, 24-8 and No. 19 Minnesota, 25-10.

Against Missouri
The Monarchs started hot against reigning MAC Champion Missouri, winning the first three bouts of the meet. In the opening bout at 125 pounds, No. 10 Killian Cardinale overcame a late deficit with a late takedown to earn a 4-3 win by decision victory over Dack Punke to give the Monarchs the early advantage.

Freshman Shannon Hanna II earned his first dual victory of his career after taking down Cameron Valdiviez, 12-9. Hanna earned five takedowns in the bout, four of which came in the final frame to propel him to the win.

The 141-pound bout featured two ranked wrestlers, as No. 14 Sa'Derian Perry faced off against No. 8 Grant Leeth. Perry got the better of Leeth in the third period of their bout, winning the period, 4-1 to give him the 7-3 win by decision over the returning All-American. Perry's victory gave the Monarchs a 9-0 lead after three bouts.

Perry's win would be the last one for the Monarchs in the dual, as Missouri would go on to win the final seven bouts of the contest. After No. 2 Brock Mauller earned an 11-6 win by decision over Kenan Carter at 149 pounds, No. 11 Jarrett Jacques got the better of All-American Larry Early in the 157-pound matchup. Jacques never trailed against Early, earning a 7-1 win by decision.

At 165 pounds, No. 24 Shane Jones was defeated by Peyton Mocco, 10-6 to even the score at nine apiece. The Tigers took the lead for good in the 174-pound bout between Alex Cramer and No. 19 Jeremiah Kent. Kent earned five points for his team in a technical fall victory over Cramer, 16-0 after five minutes.

No. 17 Dylan Wisman earned a 15-4 win by major decision over Antonio Agee at 184 pounds to give the Tigers an 18-9 lead. At 197 pounds, No. 23 Wyatt Koelling edged Monarch senior Tim Young in a 3-1 win by decision that took an extra sudden victory period.

The dual ended after No. 30 Will Hilliard lost against Jose Diaz, 10-5. The Monarchs lost a point due to controlling the mat to bring the final score to 24-8.

"We had some real battles with Missouri. We feel that the score is a little deceiving as pretty much every match was razor thin," assistant head coach Daryl Thomas said after the day's matches. "We got good wins from Cardinale, Hanna and Perry, who beat the No. 8 wrestler and a returning All-American."

Against Minnesota
The Monarchs never held the lead in their second dual of the day, this one coming against No. 19 Minnesota.

"We had a quick turnaround in wrestling two powerhouse programs back-to-back, as we dropped a tough one to Minnesota," Thomas said.

The meet started with a ranked matchup between No. 10 Cardinale and No. 13 Pat McKee. Cardinale held a 3-2 lead after the first period, thanks to a late takedown, but those would be the last points the top-10 wrestler would receive. The ranked Gopher would then take the next five points to earn a 7-3 win by decision.

Hanna was the only Monarch to win both of his bouts on the day, as he took down Jake Gliva in the afternoon session in a 6-3 win by decision to tie the meet, 3-3.

At 141 pounds, Perry was asked to face another top-10 opponent as he took on No. 2 Mitch McKee. All the points came in the middle period of the bout, as each wrestler earned a takedown, but McKee earned two escape points to take a 4-2 lead. He would hold on to that lead throughout the third period to put the Gophers up, 6-3, and they never would look back.

The second of three top-five wrestlers Minnesota boasts, Brayton Lee, competed against Carter in the 149-pound bout. Carter held the top-five wrestler close, and put together a late surge, but he could not complete the comeback, as Lee earned a 10-8 win by decision over the senior Monarch.

No. 7 Early earned a 5-3 win by decision over Carson Brolsma at 157 pounds, but that was followed by an 11-2 loss for No. 24 Jones in the 165-pound bout against the Gophers' Bailee O'Reilly.

Luke Drugac saw his first action of the South Beach Duals in the second dual of the day, as he was asked to take on No. 7 Devin Skatzka at 174 pounds. Drugac held his ranked opponent to just two points in the final two frames, but ultimately lost in a 6-1 decision. No. 18 Owen Webster defeated Agee in a 7-1 win by decision in the next bout at 184 pounds.

At 197 pounds, Tim Young earned a major decision victory over Garrett Joles, 16-4 to earn four points for the Monarchs.

The final bout of the day was another ranked matchup, as No. 2 Gable Steveson pinned No. 30 Hilliard in two minutes and 20 seconds, giving Minnesota a 25-10 win.

"We look forward to the opportunities in front of us tomorrow," Thomas explained. "We're looking forward to our matches against No. 14 Wyoming and South Dakota State."

Up Next
Tomorrow, ODU will start day two of the South Beach Duals against No. 14 Wyoming, with the first bout scheduled to start at 11 a.m. The Monarchs will then face off against South Dakota State immediately after, scheduled for 1 p.m.
