NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion wrestling team will hit the mats for the final time in 2019 when it participates in the South Beach Duals, a two-day event located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, starting on Sunday, December 29.

The Monarchs will compete in four different matches, with three of them coming against top-20 opponents, according to Intermat's dual meet rankings. The first match will be against Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe, No. 20 Missouri, which will occur at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Later in the day, ODU will take on No. 19 Minnesota at 1 p.m.

Day two features an 11 a.m. match against No. 14 Wyoming followed by the fourth and final match of the event against South Dakota State. There will also be a mini individual tournament to close each day, beginning at 3 p.m.

The Monarchs are coming off of their first dual victory of the season, a 33-9 drubbing over SIUE in their first MAC meet of the year. Five Monarchs are featured in the latest national polls, with Larry Early coming in at No. 7 at 157 pounds, Killian Cardinale coming in at No. 10 at 125 pounds, Sa'Derian Perry checking in at No. 14 at 141 pounds, Shane Jones coming in at No. 24 at 165 pounds and Will Hilliard rounding out the list, checking in at No. 30 at 285 pounds.

About Missouri
T
he Tigers are the reigning MAC champions and have won 13 of the 14 previous meeting they've had with the Monarchs. The last time these two teams met, Missouri defeated ODU in Chartway Arena, 40-3. 

MU has six wrestlers featured in the latest national rankings, with two featured in the top-10 in their weight classes. At 149 pounds, All-American and reigning MAC champ Brock Mauller checks in at No. 2 after an 11-0 start to the season. North Carolina's Austin O'Connor is the only wrestler in the nation ahead of Mauller, sitting atop the 149-pound rankings. 

No. 9 Grant Leeth is the other top-10 wrestler the Tigers boast, as he has a 2-1 record this season at 141 pounds. Leeth was an All-American and MAC champion in 2018.

About Minnesota
Sunday's second match represents the first time the Monarchs face off against Minnesota in program history. The Gophers are 2-2 this season and are coming off of a 22-10 victory over South Dakota State. Minnesota ranks No. 19 according to Intermat.

The Gophers have eight nationally ranked wrestlers on their roster, with four top-10 wrestlers and three top-five wrestlers. Gable Steveson is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the heavyweight class, while Mitch McKee is ranked No. 3 at 141 pounds and Braylon Lee checks in at No. 5 at 149 pounds.  
 
About Wyoming
The Cowboys check in at No. 14 in Intermat's rankings, and they also feature two top-10 wrestlers in their lineup. At 133 pounds, Montorie Bridges has a 15-2 record, propelling him to the No.7 spot in the rankings. Hayden Hastings checks in at No. 10 at 174 pounds, going 15-4 on the year. They have three other wrestlers featured in the national rankings.

The Monarchs are 0-3 against Wyoming in the program's history, with the last meeting coming in 2014. The Cowboys won a 24-10 decision.  

About South Dakota State
Like Minnesota, the Monarch's match against the South Dakota State will be the first one between the two teams. The Jackrabbits are 1-2, winning their matchup against Utah Valley. In their last match, South Dakota State fell to Minnesota, 22-10.  
 
The Jackrabbits have four wrestlers featured in national polls, with the highest being Tanner Sloan at 197 pounds. Sloan comes into the South Beach Duals at No. 14 according to Intermat.
