NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (9-2) women's basketball team defeated Hampton 75-38 on the second day of the Anne Donovan Classic. The Friday evening win marked ODU's biggest margin of victory this season, defeating the Pirates (3-5) by 37 points.
"I'm really excited to have game number two under our belt with a win," explained head coach Nikki McCray. "I thought we got off to a really good start, our pace of play really dictated that, that's been key for us."
In the opening quarter, ODU scored seven-straight points before allowing Hampton to put any points on the board. The Pirates got within one with just over two minutes to go but a 9-0 scoring run rom the Monarchs to close out the quarter gave them a 18-9 lead after 10 minutes. In the second quarter, ODU held the Pirates to just 20-percent. The Monarchs went into the locker room with a 31-17 lead.
"We're a fast team, we like to play fast and we're starting to execute a little bit better."
ODU's third period set a school record for most points scored in a quarter. In that quarter, senior Taylor Edwards scored 10 points and added two steals. The Monarchs shot 63-percent during that 10 minutes. ODU scored 17 points off turnovers in that quarter as well. To close out the game, sophomore Amaya Register added seven points for ODU, which included one three point field goal and four made free throws.
Overall, ODU scored 25 points off turnovers, the most earned this season. Off their bench, ODU scored 25 points. Sophomore Amari Young led the team in scoring, notching 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and one block.

After once riding a three-game winning streak, the Mountaineers (4-6) are facing a three-game losing streak. Individually, Kendall Freese leads the squad in scoring. Freese has been named NEC Player of the Week on Dec. 9.
