NORFOLK, Va. – Former ODU men’s tennis associate head coach, Sergey Avdeyev, was named the head coach of the UTSA men’s tennis team on Tuesday. Avdeyev takes over the helm of the Roadrunners after serving as the associate head coach at Old Dominion since 2016. He helped lead the Monarchs to the 2018 Conference USA Championship.

“Congratulations to Sergey for this amazing opportunity and congratulations to UTSA for making such a great hire,” said ODU head coach Dominik Mueller. “They are getting a head coach that is ready and knows what it takes to win. Sergey has proven to be one of the best assistant coaches in the country with his work and accomplishments over the past three and half years and deserves this opportunity. I’m obviously sad to lose such a great assistant and friend, but mainly happy for him that he can finally prove himself as a head coach. I’m sure he will do amazing things at UTSA.”

In 2019, Avdeyev was named the ITA Atlantic Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. Avdeyev helped ODU to a No. 66 national team ranking.

Over the past three seasons, Avdeyev has helped lead ODU to national team rankings and one of the top teams within the C-USA.

A 2009 graduate of Oklahoma, Avdeyev was a top 50 player for the Sooners in both singles and doubles. Following his collegiate career, Avdeyev also competed on the professional circuit for two years. A native of Kazakhstan, Avdeyev was ranked in the top 10 in his country and was also a member of the junior Davis Cup team for Kazakhstan. On the ATP, Avdeyev recorded several victories over top 200 world-ranked players.
