SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Behind 11 points from both Amari Young and Victoria Morris, the Monarchs (4-1) defeated Cal Poly, 61-55 on Friday afternoon. The win marks the programs first victory over Cal Poly (1-5).
ODU got off to a hot start, taking a 17-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, ODU outscored the Mustangs 15-11. In just the first two quarters, ODU earned eight steals. The Monarchs went into the locker room with a 32-19 lead.
The Monarchs opened up scoring in the third quarter, leading by 19 with 5:57 left. Junior Morris went 2-for-3 in three-point field goals during that time. Cal Poly picked up their scoring, adding 14 points in the third period.
Heading to the final quarter, the Monarchs led by a 48-33 score. The Mustangs went on a 9-0 run and outscored ODU 22-13 in the final 10 minutes of play. Taylor Edwards' four-made free-throws helped ODU hold on to their lead in the final seconds.
Overall, ODU made 11 steals, with five of those were credited to Young. The Monarchs shot 38 percent from the field goal category and 46 percent from the free throw line.
