ANNAPOLIS, Md. - No. 13 Killian Cardinale placed third, No. 19 Shane Jones placed fifth and the Old Dominion Wrestling team finished in 14th in the 42nd Annual Navy Classic on Saturday.
"Killian had a great tournament in beating a nationally-ranked opponent from Virginia Tech in the third-place bout," head coach Steve Martin said. "Shane also wrestled tough on the day and hit a lot of crisp techniques."
Cardinale managed to get all seven points in the third-place bout in the third round, four of which came on a near fall, to take out No. 20 Joey Prata of Virginia Tech. To get to the bronze medal match, Cardinale went 3-1, losing to American's Gage Curry in the semifinal round.
Jones earned his fifth-place finish after going 5-1 on the day, taking down Drew Hughes of Michigan State in a 5-2 win by decision. His only loss came against third-place finisher Zachary Hartman out of Bucknell.
In his first bout of the day at 133 pounds, Steven Simpson earned a victory over No. 20 Tye Varndell, pinning the ranked wrestler at 6:45. That was one of two ranked victories the Monarchs had on the day, the other coming in Cardinale's third-place bout. The victory over Varndell brought Simpson to the quarterfinals round, where Air Force's Jared Van Vleet ultimately defeated him.
At 285 pounds, No. 24 Will Hilliard went 3-2 on the day, picking up wins over George Mason's Jacob Slinger (13-8), Brown's Tony Valentino (6-0) and Cleveland State's John Kelbly (7-1).
As a team, the Monarchs finished with 41 points, good for a 14th-place finish in the field of 18 teams.
"The first four weeks of the season gave us a good gauge one what we have to improve on," Martin added. "We are looking forward to returning to our wrestling room and continuing to get better."
