NORFOLK, Va. - Head coach Murray Rudisill and the Old Dominion men's golf program announced the signing of Mason McCoy on Wednesday afternoon.

McCoy is a native of Virginia Beach, and played his high school golf at nearby Salem High School. He will join the Monarchs as a freshman for the 2020-21 season.

"We are very excited to have Mason McCoy sign a national letter-of-intent to attend Old Dominion next fall. He is an outstanding golfer and a great young man." Rudisill said of his new recruit. "Mason is from Virginia Beach and he and his twin sisters provide a dynamic trio for their golf program at Salem."

McCoy has registered some noteworthy finishes in his high school career with the SunDevils. In his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, McCoy qualified for the Class 5 State Tournament. He also won the Governor's Cup in and qualified for match play at the 2019 Virginia State Amateur. In 2018, McCoy placed third in Region 5A to lead his team to a second-place finish in the region, clinching the SunDevils a spot in the Class 5 State Tournament.

Rudisill is not only excited to have McCoy on his team, but the former math professor is excited to have him in ODU's classrooms as well, and he is looking forward to having a student athlete with Hampton Roads ties on the Monarchs.

"Mason is an outstanding student, and we anticipate him not only receiving a golf scholarship, but also an academic scholarship next fall," Rudisill explained. "It is exciting to not only have another Virginia resident on our golf team, but also a Tidewater player. It is been a couple of years since we had local player on our squad and we think Mason will have an immediate impact on our team as a freshman."
