COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Old Dominion men’s soccer team (2-6-1, 1-2-1 C-USA) earned its first conference victory of the season, beating South Carolina (5-5, 0-3 C-USA), 2-1 on the road on Saturday night.

The Monarchs struck first in the game’s eighth minute, as junior Tom Wüstenberg took a pass from Jimmy Filerman and deposited it into the net for his first goal of the season to give ODU the early lead.

The Gamecocks managed to tie the game in the 21st minute of action, after the ball found it’s way passed Monarch keeper Djibril Doumbia after a South Carolina corner.

ODU jumped back ahead with just under eight minutes left in the first half, as the Gamecocks put the ball in their own net to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead, a lead they would take into the halftime locker rooms.

At the intermission, the ODU offense took six shots and had four corner opportunities, while South Carolina couldn’t get a shot off in the first 45 minutes and had just two penalty corners.

The Gamecocks took their first two shots of the game within the first 10 minutes of the second half, both of which were saved by Doumbia.

Overall, the Monarchs outshot South Carolina, 10-8 in the 90 minute match.
