NORFOLK, Va. – In its only exhibition game leading up to the 2019 regular season, the Old Dominion men’s basketball team downed CNU by a 64-35 score on Wednesday night at Chartway Arena. ODU’s defense held the Captains to 19.0% shooting from the floor and 20.7% shooting from deep for the contest. 10 different Monarchs scored on Wednesday night, led by Xavier Green’s 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists.

“At times our defense was really, really good. I don’t know if it was 19% good,” said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. “I thought we sat down and guarded and did a decent job on the boards. And what we did allowed us to get out in transition. I don’t remember the last time we scored 24 fast break points and I think that could be really big for our basketball team this year, trying to put points on the board, especially with our new point guards. I was also pleased with our guys’ effort tonight.”

Also in double figures for ODU were Jaylin Hunter (12 points) and Joe Reece, who scored 10 points to compliment eight rebounds. Dajour Dickens hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Monarchs held advantages in for points in the paint (46-10), fast break points (24-0), rebounds (57-44), assists (15-6), steals (10-1), blocked shots (9-2), bench points (28-18) and points off turnovers (16-5).

Old Dominion will tip-off the 2019 regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET, when the Monarchs travel to Cedar Falls for a showdown against Northern Iowa. Tuesday night’s game will stream on ESPN+.
