NORFOLK, Va. – For the fourth time this season the BIG EAST Conference named Old Dominion freshman back Nicole Fredricks BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon. Senior back Rebecca Birch was also recognized by the conference in its weekly awards, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Fredricks and Birch helped lead the ODU defense to a 4-0 shutout victory against conference opponent Quinnipiac last Friday, holding the Bobcats to just two shots and keeping them away from the penalty corner. Birch also added two assists to her ledger on the day.
In the Monarchs’ game against No. 1 North Carolina, the defensive unit held the second-highest scoring offense in the country to just one goal on the afternoon. The two defensive standouts were also a part of the defensive corner unit that did not allow a goal off of eight UNC penalty corner opportunities. Fredricks also earned her first-career defensive save in the effort.
This is Fredricks’ fourth Freshman of the Week award, and her second in the last three weeks.
ODU will wrap up its regular season on the road this Friday, November 1, as the team heads up to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on Villanova in a conference showdown at 4:00 p.m.
