POWELL’S POINT, N.C. – After a slow start to round one, the Old Dominion men’s golf team, led by juniors Gustav Fransson and Rasmus Konradsson, roared back to place second at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, hosted by Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powell’s Point, North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon.

Entering the final round, the Monarchs were just one stroke behind North Dakota State, and even took the lead at one point, but the Bisons pulled away, posting a score of 272 for the round against ODU’s 275. NDSU finished with a 26-under par, just four strokes ahead of the Monarchs’ score of 22-under. Georgetown rounded out the top-three, finishing at 14-under.

After the first few holes of round one, it looked like Old Dominion’s chances of cracking the top-10 were slim, as the team sat in last place early with a team score of 11-over par. However, the team turned it around to end the round in a tie for fourth place with a 1-under par.

The Monarchs posted their lowest team score of any round in the afternoon session of Monday’s outing, finishing the second round with a score of 272, or 12-under par. The surge was led by Konradsson, who posted a Monarch-best 64, collecting seven birdies, including a stretch of five in six holes on the back nine.

Individually, Fransson posted a final-round score of 65 to lead ODU on the tournament’s final day, locking him into his second straight third-place finish with a 7-under par. Konradsson’s second round propelled him into a tie for fourth place with a mark of 6-under, while Chris Ayers ended the tournament with a top-15 finish, coming into the clubhouse with a 3-under, tied for 13th. Both Carter Morgan and Filip Wetterqvist finished the tournament 1-under par, tying each other for 26thplace in the field of 79 golfers.

Old Dominion also sent four individuals to Kilmarlic as freshman Alex Zurat led the group with a 5-over par, putting him in a tie for 46th. Michael Minnehan and Chandler Wilkins each came into the clubhouse tied for 53rdwith an 8-over, while Doug Rios-Ceballos checked in with a 10-over par, good for a tie for 59th

The individual winner of the tournament, St. Joseph’s Michael O’Brien stormed up the leaderboard in the final round, posting a Kilmarlic Golf Club record of 61 on the par-71 course.

The ODU/OBX Intercollegiate was the final stop for the Monarchs’ fall season, as the team will be back on the links on February 14 in Palm City, Florida for the Martin Downs Collegiate.
