Game Five Preview: Old Dominion vs. Western Kentucky

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University football hosts Western Kentucky in the Conference USA opener on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. at Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

> ODU (1-3) is coming off a 24-21 loss to East Carolina, while WKU (2-2, 2-0 C-USA) defeated UAB 20-13.

> Stone Smartt completed 20-of-33 passes for 203 yards and rushed 22 times for 76 yards, but also threw two interceptions and fumbled at the ECU one yard line.

> Senior Hasaan Patterson had eight career catches heading into last Saturday, and he led ODU with four catches against the Pirates for 41 yards.

> Lawrence Garner had a game-high 10 tackles and half a tackle for loss, while Jordan Young had his first career interception.

For the fourth-straight game to open the season, Old Dominion scored on its opening drive. And for the third-straight game, it was a Nick Rice field goal.

Through four games this season, the ODU defense has improved from last in Conerence USA, to second in run defense and total defense.

Garner Does What He Does
Junior linebacker Lawrence Garner had a game-high 10 tackles in Saturday’s loss to ECU, a season high.

Since the beginning of last season, the lowest number of tackles Garner has had in a game is six, in ODU’s 77-14 win over VMI in the second to last game of 2018.

Garner is fifth in C-USA with 8.8 tackles per game.
