NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion field hockey team will open conference play against Big East foe Providence on the road on Friday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to Harrisonburg, Va. to face James Madison on Sunday, September 22 at 12:00 p.m.

The Monarchs have won their last four games, taking down American, William & Mary, then-No. 17 Penn State and Virginia Commonwealth. In those four games, ODU has allowed just two goals. 

The Big East recognized two members of the stingy Monarch defense, as senior Rebecca Birch was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, and Nicole Fredricks was named Freshman of the Week. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray also earned a Player of the Week nod, as she was recognized by Synapse Sports as their choice for Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in goal the past three games.

MacGillivray has posted two shutouts in the last four games, For the season, she has 17 saves and a goal against average of 1.09.

In the team’s most recent victory, sophomore Riley Taylor scored two goals in the fourth quarter to propel ODU to a 2-0 victory over VCU.   

About Providence
The Friars are also riding a four-game winning streak, defeating Maine, Bryant, Brown and most recently, Lafayette, in a game where Providence prevailed 1-0 in a shootout. The Friars have four players with multiple goals, and goalie Lydia Rice has posted 26 saves and three shutouts so far this season. 

Series History
The last time these two teams met was last season, when the Monarchs dispatched Providence, 6-1 behind a hat trick from Erin Huffman and two goals from Rebecca Birch. ODU has come out victorious in seven of the eight total contests these squads have had, including the last two. 

About JMU
The Dukes have lost their last two games, including a game this past Sunday against No. 4 Maryland, 4-0. Senior Miranda Rigg leads JMU with three goals and seven total points. Eveline Zwager and Marina Rupinski each have a pair of goals for the Duke offense as well. 

Series History
Last season ODU shutout the Dukes, 3-0 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Monarchs peppered the JMU goalie with 14 shots on goal in the offensive onslaught. These two teams have been facing off against each other since 1979, and out of the 66 total meetings they’ve had, the Monarchs have come away victorious 54 times.
