NORFOLK, Va. - A brace by Deniz Dogan led the Monarchs (1-3-1, 0-0-1) over VCU, 3-1 on Tuesday night. Redshirt senior Jimmy Filerman added one goal, which marked the Monarchs first victory of the season.
The first 24 minutes of play remained scoreless until Dogan blocked the VCU (1-4) goalkeepers clear, which flew into the back of the net in the 25th minute.
In the 31st minute, VCU's Fiorre Mane soared one over Monarch defenders for the equalizer. The two sides headed into the locker rooms knotted 1-1. The Rams took a 8-5 advantage in shots through the first half.
In the second half, the Monarchs picked up the pace with another goal from Dogan in the 75th minute off a free kick. Not long after, Filerman knocked in his first goal of the season as he dodged through VCU defenders to score in the 82nd minute. Kostas Mylonas was credited with the assist.
Overall, Djibril Doumbia made two saves in goal, while facing three shots on goal from the Rams. Sebastien Hauret and Danny Durkin both took three shots.
