Mike McCarthy was a two-time wrestling All-American at 126 pounds. In 1975, he compiled a 25-10 record and placed fifth at the NCAA National Championships at 126 pounds.
As a senior in 1976, Mike placed fourth and compiled a 21-8 record. That same year he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials and commanded the University''s ROTC detachment.
He was selected by the University student newspaper, the Mace & Crown, as one of the school''s top ten athletes of the decade (1971-80). He compiled an 88-41 career record at Old Dominion. He was inducted into the Old Dominion Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, and was the eight wrestler so honored. Mike was named to the All Time ODU Wrestling Team in 2007.
Mike graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1976. He has a MSBA in business administration from Boston University in 1982 and is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia.
After four years at the ODU Army ROTC Detachment, Mike served eight years in the Army Corps of Engineers followed by 16 years in the Virginia Air National Guard. In September of 2000, Mike retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years of service. He currently works for the City of Virginia Beach in the Public Utilities Department.
