Mike Martin became the first Old Dominion University sailor to capture the Intercollegiate Yacht and Racing Association Singlehanded National Championship on Nov. 13, 1998 in New London, Ct. As a junior in 1987, Martin took fifth at the ICYRA National Championships in Charleston, SC.Martin was a three-time ICYRA Collegiate Sailing All American. In 1986, Martin received honorable mention All-American honors. In 1988 and 1989, he was a first team All-American selection.
The Alexandria, Va., native was the 1985 North American Laser Champion. He won the 1987 Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Singlehanded Championship and Laser division of the Nevins Trophy. In 1984-85, Martin was named the teams Most Valuable Freshman.
In 1997, Martin captured 505 Class World Championship. He graduated in 1989 from Old Dominion University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
