Marion Carroll lettered in both basketball and track and field for four years and captained both teams. He average 8.7 points per game in 1962 and helped lead the Monarchs to an 18-3 record under the direction of Hall-of-Fame Coach Bud Metheny.

Carroll, a native of Portsmouth, won the Virginia Collegiate State title with a high jump of 6-5 while at Old Dominion. After being honored by the Norfolk Sports Club with the Tom Scott Award as the top athlete at Old Dominion his senior year, Carroll returned to his alma mater two years later to coach and teach.

He served as assistant men's basketball coach from 1969-71, head tennis coach in 1966, men's cross country coach in 1974, and interim coach on several occasions for women's basketball, women's tennis cross country. In 1971 he became the university's assistant athletic director and served in that capacity until 1983. He also served as assistant professor at Old Dominion in the health and physical education department.
