Maaike Hilbrand from Amstelveen, Holland was one of the most dominant field hockeyplayers in Lady Monarchs history. She earned All-American honors both on and off thefield, leading the Lady Monarchs to three NCAA National Championships.
The Alumni Association''s 1992-93 Female Athlete of the Year, Maaike was alsonamed the Tom Scott Award winner as the top senior athlete. She completed her career with167 career goals which places her second all-time nationally with Marina DiGiacomo, alsofrom Old Dominion . Her 372 career points places her third all-time in NCAA history. Hilbrand led the nation in goals scored and total points all four years she competed.
Maaike earned first team All-American honors in 1991 and 1992 and was a second teamGTE/COSIDA Academic All-American selection. In 1992 Hilbrand was selected to theNCAA National Championship All-Tournament squad, and also earned All-CAA honors twice.
In 1989, Hilbrand scored 46 goals with 14 assists. She scored 48 goals in 1991, 37 in1988 and 36 in 1992. While at Old Dominion, the Lady Monarchs won the NCAA NationalChampionship in 1988 (26-1), defeating Iowa, 2-1; 1991 (26-0), defeating North Carolina, 2-0; and 1992 (25-0), defeating Iowa, 4-0, and finished second in 1989 (24-2). The four teams she competed on compiled a 101-3 record, including two undefeated teams. Maaike scored a career high six goals in a match in 1991 against Virginia. Shegraduated with a degree in marketing in 1993.
