The decade of the 1980''s has been a great one for Old Dominion University Sailing and Kevin Crawford Fullmer helped get it started in 1980.
ODU''s first sailing All-American in 1983, Fullmer placed fourth in the single-handed Nation Championships that same year. He skippered ODU to four Sourth Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association championships of the five that were held and helped lead the Monarchs to their first national ranking ever (seventh) in 1983.
Fullmer earned ICYRA All-District honors in 1981, 1982, and 1983. He was the team''s Most Valuable Player in 1982 and 1983. He was inducted into the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Hall of Fame in 1983, and was the Monarchs captain in 1982-83.
After graduating from ODU in 1983, Fullmer coached at Northwestern for two seasons before returning to ODU as the Head Coach. In his four-plus seasons, he is fast establishing himself as one of the top sailing coaches in the nation.
He has guided ODU to five national crowns as a coach, three in 1989 alone. He earned his first national title as the Lady Monarchs captured the crown in 1987. He has coached four sailing All-Americans, the 1989 National Sailor-of-the-Year and his 1989 Monarchs were awarded the prestigious Fowle Trophy, which is presented to the team with the most championships in a season.
Fullmer coached the United States team at the 1988 Youth World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
A native of Chautauqua, N.Y., Fullmer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Old Dominion University in 1983. He is the first ODU sailor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
