Joe Mallia was the only goalkeeper in Old Dominion University history to lead the squad in goals against average for three consecutive years. Mallia's goals against career average of 0.59 ranked fourth all-time in NCAA history through 1998.
The Jericho, NY native compiled a goals against average of 0.92 in 1988, 0.68 in 1989 and 0.77 in 1990, all of which were ranked in the nation's top ten. He holds the school record for the most career saves with 206 and career shutouts with 20.
As a junior, in 1989, Mallia ranked tenth nationally and second in the Sun Belt Conference in goals against average. He earned All-Sun Belt honors in 1989 and 1990. The Soccer Monarchs compiled a 33-15-13 record with Mallia in the net which included two Sun Belt Conference titles in 1989 and 1990.
In 1989, the Monarchs compiled a 10-4-4 record, won the Sun Belt title and earned the school its first ever NCAA Division Tournament appearance. Mallia was the Monarchs co-captain in 1990.
Mallia earned All-Academic honors from the Sun Belt and the Virginia Sports Information Director's Association and graduated in 1992 with a degree in sports medicine.
