Ben Ward, a native of Fort Myers, Fl., compiled a 83-33-1 record at Old Dominion University. He earned All-American honors, captured an NCAA Regional championship as well as a State Championship.
In 1984, Ben earned All-American honors with a 34-11 record. He placed seventh atthe NCAA National Championships in the 150-pound class. During the season, He won theNCAA East Regional championship, and the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championship.
As a team, the Monarchs were 20-3-1 and finished the season ranked 21st by AMATEUR WRESTLING NEWS in 1983-84. The squad placed 31st at the NCAA National Championships. As a captain of the team, the Monarchs were undefeated against Virginia state opponents, and beat nationally ranked North Carolina and tied Missouri.
As a junior, Ben compiled a 30-7 record. He placed fourth at the NCAA East Regionalsand took at the Monarch Wrestling Classic, the Southern Open and the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships.
In his sophomore year, he was 19-15-1 at 142 pounds, he took second at the U.S. Navy Turkey Bowl and the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships, and finished third at the NCAA East Regionals.
Ben graduated from Old Dominion with a degree in business administration with a concentration in management information systems.
