NORFOLK, Va. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Old Dominion field hockey team will be heading to Richmond, Va. to take on VCU on Sunday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m.
On Friday night, the Monarchs dispatched #17 Penn State, 2-1 in the team’s first road match of the season. Seniors Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch each came away with a goal in the effort, while junior Marlee McClendon and sophomore Riley Taylor both tallied an assist. Huffman and Birch each lead the team with two goals on the season, while McClendon paces the team with three assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray turned aside six shots to earn her third win of the campaign, the most saves she has had in a game thus far this season. In total, MacGillivray has 14 saves and a goals against average of 1.35 in the four games the Monarchs have played.
About VCU
The Rams are 2-2 this season, and are coming off of a 1-0 shootout victory over William & Mary. Junior Maite Sturm leads the Ram offense with three goals while goalkeeper Sasha Elliot has stopped 18 of the 23 shots she has faced.
Series History
Last season the Monarchs fell to VCU, 3-2 at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. After taking a 1-1 tie into halftime, the Rams netted two goals in the second half to seal the victory. Historically, these two teams have been facing off against each other since 1974, with ODU holding a 42-5-1 advantage.
