NORFOLK, Va. – In the 2019 season opener, the Old Dominion field hockey team (0-1) fell to No. 11 Virginia (1-0) by a 3-0 score on Friday night at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first quarter, before UVA broke the ice in the second quarter after a Makayla Gallen goal. Before the half ended, the Cavaliers threatened again, when Jacquelyn Wilkins took two shots within seconds of each other, but both were stopped by ODU's redshirt sophomore keeper Cam MacGillivray.
The Cavaliers took the 1-0 lead into the half, outshooting ODU 3-1 in the game’s opening 30 minutes of action. Both teams couldn’t get passed each other’s defenses to start the second half, as neither team recorded a shot in the third quarter.
UVA struck quickly once the fourth quarter began, as Gallen rattled the cage for her second goal of the evening two minutes in. Erin Shannahan scored just over two minutes later, to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead.
The Monarchs nearly responded later in the fourth, but senior Rebecca Birch’s shot was saved by UVA goalie Lauren Hausheer. MacGillivray ended the night with two saves, while Birch and her classmate Alexandria Brewer each tallied a shot for the Monarchs.
ODU will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 6, when it takes on No. 25 nationally ranked William & Mary at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex for a 5:00 p.m. ET start.
