NORFOLK, Va. – Holly Hutchinson of the Old Dominion women’s tennis team will be competing in the 30th Summer University Games on July 5-13 in Naples, Italy. Hutchinson is one of just two collegiate student-athletes representing Great Britain women’s tennis in the 2019 University Games, with the other being Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford.
ODU women’s tennis head coach, Dominic Manilla, also announced that Hutchinson will serve as the Monarchs team captain for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
“I’m so excited about representing my country and ODU for the World University Games,” said Hutchinson. “I’m really looking forward to getting out there and competing with the best university student-athletes in the world.”
Organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Summer University Games occur once every two years, and are the second largest multi-sport Games in the world after the Olympics.128 nations with over 9,300 athletes will participate in the Summer University Games. In all, there are 18 different sports and 222 events. The opening ceremony for the Games takes place on July 3.
This past season, Hutchinson earned First Team All-Conference USA accolades for singles and doubles and was a member of the Co-Outstanding Doubles Team of the C-USA Championship. She was named C-USA Athlete of the Week four times, which was actually more than any other entire team in the league collected. At one point, Hutchinson garnered three weekly awards in a matter of four weeks.
The Middlesex, England-native ended the year nationally ranked No. 81 in singles and No. 73 for doubles. Hutchinson helped ODU earn its first ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, which marked the program’s second ever appearance in the Big Dance and first since 2001. At one point this season, Hutchinson helped ODU to a No. 19 national ranking, which is the best ever in program history.
Hutchinson turned in a 3.68 cumulative GPA as a communications major. She is a six-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and has made Dean’s List five times in her tenure in Norfolk.
