NORFOLK, Va. – In the final spring game of the 2019 season, the Old Dominion women’s soccer team took down Virginia Wesleyan by a 3-0 score at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Monarchs finished the spring season with a 4-1 record, while outscoring their opponents 13-1. All four of ODU’s spring victories were shutouts.
In the 40th minute, ODU’s Blair Vilov won the header on a VWU goal kick and directed it to Amanda Nhek. Nhek turned and played Iris Achterhof through in behind the Virginia Wesleyan defense, where Achterhof took one touch and then finished the ball past the onrushing Wesleyan goalkeeper, giving Old Dominion a 1-0 lead at halftime.
ODU’s Reagan Tate and Talia Tapper combined on the wing following a throw in from Tate to find Amanda Nhek in the corner of the box in the 70th minute. Nhek was brought down from behind, earning a penalty kick. Riley Kennett stepped up and beat the keeper with a well-placed shot off the post and in VWU net, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage.
In the 80th minute, ODU’s Emma Terefenko picked off a pass, preventing VWU transition out of their own half. Some quick ball movement from the Monarchs led to a pass from Tate to Nhek just outside the box. Nhek laid the ball off for Emily Garrick who laced a ball inside the far post, ultimately sealing the deal on Old Dominion’s 3-0 victory.
