NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Rice at the Bud Metheny Complex, handing the Owls the series sweep.
Rice (12-18, 4-5) won the opening game, 14-10, in a slugfest and then earned an 11-2 win in the series finale.
Old Dominion (16-11, 1-8) has now dropped its first three Conference USA series.
In game one of the twin bill, a Dominic Cox grand slam in the fifth inning propelled the Owls to victory in a back-and-forth contest.
Bryce Windham, who hit a leadoff inside-the-park home run, and Ryan Teschko both homered for the first time in their ODU careers in game one. Andy Garriola also homered. Garriola and Teschko both finished with three RBIs.
In game two, Rice broke the game open with a 5-run third inning and that proved to be all of the offense the Owls would need to support starting pitcher Evan Kravetz, who went eight strong innings for Rice.
Garriola had three of ODU's four hits in game two.
Up next, ODU heads to Virginia for a midweek matchup on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET at Davenport Field.
