Throughout spring practice we will take a closer look at some of the players on the team. Today we start with redshirt freshman wide receiver, Isaiah Spencer.

Q: Why ODU?
IS: I really liked the environment and the culture. It wasn’t too far from home.  I also liked the underdog mentality and the fact it was a mid-major school.

Q: What is your major?
IS: Sports Medicine. I am in the process of switching to exercise science. 

Q: What are your career aspirations?
IS: My goal is to make it into the pro’s, but if that doesn’t work out, I would like to be a physical therapist in the college atmosphere because I enjoy helping others. 

Q: When did you start playing football?
IS: I started playing when I was six years old. I played JV when I was in eighth grade. Started playing varsity as a freshman.

Q: Did you play any other sports growing up?
IS: I played basketball, baseball, and ran track (sprint and high jump in high school).

Q: How has the adjustment from quarterback to wide receiver been?
IS: It has been difficult. I have never played the position up until this point, but the coaches have supported me throughout the way.  

Q: What adjustments have you had to make to your game?
IS: I have had to loosen my hips and body. I have also been running a lot more and been doing Pilates.

Q: What do most people not know about you?
IS: I am big into music. I like to play the saxophone, drums and keyboard.

Q: How did the redshirt year help you?
IS: It was a big adjustment not playing at all. It helped me balance my responsibilities playing for the football team and focusing on my classes.

Q: What do you think you can improve on this spring and summer into the fall?
IS: I think I need to improve upon knowing my assignments, reads for the wide receiver and memorizing the plays.

Q: Favorite athlete and why?
IS: Tyrod Taylor, he was my role model growing up. I liked that he gives back to the community. He came to some of my high school football games.

Q: Favorite food?
IS: Mac and cheese

IS: Paid in Full

Q: Favorite actor/actress?
IS: Will Smith

Q: If you could have one superpower what would it be?
IS: Telekinesis (mind control) 

Q: Favorite superhero?
IS: Black Panther

Q: Any hobbies?
IS: I enjoy fishing. 

Q: Favorite professional football team?
IS: Chicago Bears 

Q: Favorite NFL player?
IS: Deandre Hopkins

Q: What has been your best memory so far while at ODU?
IS: The upset victory over Virginia Tech. 

Q: What is your favorite thing about playing football here?
IS: It feels like home. I have a lot of friends and enjoy the relationships I have developed with them.

Q: This is your first time going through winter workouts, how was it?
IS: It was very physically and mentally demanding. Very difficult.
