NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion (2-8) lacrosse team defeated East Carolina (5-4), 15-8 on Friday afternoon. The Monarchs were led by Glory Johnson, who scored six goals, a season high for the junior.
The Monarchs got out to a hot start with a two-goal lead, both from Johnson. ECU answered three minutes later but ODU responded with three goals from Lindsay Baer, Lilly Siskind and Johnson. ECU scored twice more before Claire Porter knocked one in off a free position shot to end the first 30 minutes of play. ODU was up 6-3 over the Pirates to end the first period.
To open the second half, the Monarchs got off to a four goal start. Sophia Richie, Brooke Stein and Johnson netted those four goals.
ODU took advantage of two man-up opportunities in the second half after ECU was penalized with yellow cards. Richie and Siskind were the goal scorers.
The Pirates then scored back-to-back goals to stay within five of ODU. Johnson and Richie then answered to open up to a 12-6 lead. Grace McCrery scored her first goal of the season with just over four minutes to play in the second half.
Ryann Bauer connected twice with Johnson and once with Stein to notch three assists on the afternoon.
In goal, Haleigh Wurzel recorded 12 saves. Also on the defensive side, MK Maloney picked up four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Freshman Danielle Dundas earned five draw controls.
Johnson has scored 29 goals this season.
