DENTON, Texas -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team staved off a late North Texas rally to defeat the Mean Green, 72-71, on their home court on Thursday evening at The Super Pit.
Old Dominion (16-5, 7-2) has now won seven straight, its longest win streak since 2009-10.
An 11-0 run gave ODU a 63-49 lead with 4:47 remaining in the contest. North Texas (10-10, 3-5) then mounted a late run to close the gap to 72-71 with less than 30 seconds to play.
On the final possession of the game, the ODU defense held strong, forcing an off-balanced shot that missed the rim completely.
Ajah Wayne led the Monarchs with 16 points, including 14 in the second half, and Dejah Carter added 14 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting night to go along six rebounds.
"We survived. It wasn't pretty. We were lucky to get this win. Down the stretch, we have to get better." - Coach McCray
Joining Wayne and Carter in double figures were Taylor Edwards, who had 13 points and a team-high four assists, and Victoria Morris and Maggie Robinson, who both finished with 10.
The Monarchs shot 47 percent as a team and forced 17 Mean Green turnovers, while committing just 11.
