HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team was unable to overcome an 18-point deficit and ultimately fell at Marshall, 57-48, in the opening game of Conference USA play on Thursday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

ODU (9-4, 0-1) got off to a slow start offensively, scoring a season-low 13 points in the first half. Marshall (7-7, 1-0) led 27-13 at the half and extended its lead to 34-16 early in the third quarter, but the Monarchs stormed back to cut the lead to as little as six late in the fourth quarter.

However, the Monarchs were unable to cut it to a one-possession game down the stretch. ODU committed a season-high 23 turnovers and shot 31 percent from the field, while Marshall shot 35 percent and had 15 turnovers.

"This is a stinger, but I want to congratulate Marshall. They did a great job of taking away our angles. This was the first game we had some adversity and then we didn't perform and it just snowballed." - Coach McCray

Ajah Wayne led ODU with 14 points and eight rebounds and Aziah Hudson added 11 points, all of which were scored in the second half.

Up next, the Monarchs travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to take on WKU on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
