NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (10-3-2, 6-1-0 C-USA) men’s soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six after their 3-0 win over FIU (7-8-0, 5-2-0) on Sunday night. Three different Monarchs in Max Wilschrey, Niko Klosterhalfen and Kostas Mylonas scored en route to their second straight shutout.
“It starts with the forwards and goes all the way back to the keeper but a really solid defensive performance as a team and the center backs and the keepers were magnificent," said head coach Alan Dawson.
The first half was made up of back and forth action until Wislchrey’s goal in the 40th minute off a Klosterhalfen pass. With that goal, Wilschrey tallied his 11th goal of the season. ODU went into halftime leading in shots 6-4.
In the first few minutes of the second half, Mylonas sent a pass to Daniel Corona who then sent a cross to Klosterhalfen. The senior chipped it over the keeper’s head for the second goal of the game for the Monarchs. Klosterhalfen now owns seven goals this season.
Just seven minutes later, Wilschrey sent a cross to Mylonas, who leaped above the FIU defender to collect his third goal of the season and third goal of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Mertcan Akar collected three saves and his fifth shutout of the season. Mylonas took five shots. Overall, ODU outshot the Panthers, 14-8.
ODU is now at the top of the C-USA standings alongside Kentucky.
