WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The 25th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team continued its success on the road, defeating American, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital.

Erin Huffman scored a goal less than two minutes before halftime for what proved to be the game-winning score.

ODU (9-5) is now 8-1 in games away from Norfolk this season.

"We played good, quality hockey in a game that was very physical," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "We moved the ball well overall and we defended with composure and toughness. I thought our players handled the physical tackling and the officiating very well throughout the match."

The shutout was ODU's fourth of the season and the first since Sept. 2. American (7-5) entered Sunday having scored 26 goals in its last four games.

Kealsie Robles and Lacey Frazier combined for the shutout in the cage. Robles played the first half, making one save, and Frazier entered for the second and made two saves.

For the goal-scorer Huffman, the goal was her ninth of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Rebecca Birch. The goal was also her team-best fifth game-winning goal.

"The team is working together and working to support each other, which is great to see at a key point in the season," said Griffiths. "I'm proud of the entire squad from 1 through 24."

Up next, the Monarchs remain on the road for a Big East match at Quinnipiac next Friday.
