DURHAM, N.C. – Despite playing No. 14 nationally ranked Duke (6-1-1) even for the latter 87 minutes, the Old Dominion women's soccer team (2-3-2) fell the Blue Devils by a 1-0 score on Sunday night at Koskinen Stadium. Duke is coming off a 23-2-1 season a year ago, in which the Blue Devils advanced to the national semifinals.
“After losing a very early goal which could have been avoided I thought we showed great character to come together and really take the game to them in the first half,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “We outshot them and moved the ball and created some opportunities, which was great to see. In the second half, as you would expect we had to dig deep and show resilience as they put us under some sustained periods of pressure. We held strong but just couldn’t get enough momentum at the end to get that push to equalize.”
“They are a quality side no doubt, but today I think they will realize they were in a game. For us, we need to build on the character we showed and win the next game,” Hind concluded.
Kaylay McCoy scored in the third minute off a Mary Kate McGuire assist to give Duke an early 1-0 lead.
At the half, Old Dominion outshot the Blue Devils 4-3.
The Monarchs would play Duke even for the final 87 minutes, as ODU freshman goalkeeper Jasmine Crawley played all 90 minutes in net, making four saves.
ODU will host North Texas on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m., before welcoming Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 6:00 p.m.
