NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 11 Old Dominion field hockey team has a big weekend at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex, headlined by a Friday night showdown against the reigning national champs, No. 2 UConn, at 5 p.m. ET. The Monarchs also host VCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Both games will be streamed on Monarch Media.
Old Dominion is off to its best start since 2011 and is one of just five unbeaten teams in the nation. The Monarchs are allowing 0.84 goals per game, which ranks fifth in the country, and have three shutouts in seven games.
Offensively, Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch are tied for the team lead in goals with five each, while freshman Ilse Westera and Merle Knobloch both have seven points.
Defensively, goalkeeper Kealsie Robles returns to the squad after missing the last three games due to a temporary call-up to the U.S. Senior National Team. Robles, along with Cam MacGillivray and Lacey Frazier, have split time in the cage this season.
ODU is 24-16 all-time against UConn, but have not defeated the Huskies since 2013.
Against VCU, the Monarchs lead the series, 42-4-1. This will be the first matchup between the former CAA foes since 2011.
ABOUT #2 UCONN
The Huskies, ranked second in the latest NFHCA Top 25, are also undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record. UConn is led by their graduate transfer back, Cecile Pieper, who won a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics with Team Germany.
ABOUT VCU
The Rams enter the weekend with a 3-3 record with wins over Bryant, Saint Louis and Towson. Emily McNamara, the nation's leading goal-scorer with 12 goals, leads a potent Ram offense that is averaging four goals per game.
