FAIRFAX, Va. - Despite Old Dominion (2-1-2) outshooting George Mason (2-2-0) 16-8 for the match, the Monarchs fell by a 2-1 score on Thursday night at George Mason Stadium. The loss was the first of the 2018 season for Old Dominion.
“I was really pleased with our performance tonight,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “We scored a deserving goal off a set-play; it was a great first half and we played with good intensity. The penalty let them back in the game. And then to lose a goal over something somewhat out of our control is frustrating. I am very proud of our players and we’ll be better from this.”
Gaby Bentley struck in the 40th minute to give ODU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The goal was assisted by Carla Morich and Natalie Johnson. The Monarchs outshot the Patriots 10-3 in the first half.
In the 47th minute, GMU’s Emma Van Der Vorst converted on a penalty kick to even the match at 1-1. The goal was the first allowed by Old Dominion’s defense in its last 400 minutes.
Sara Chontosh gave Mason a 2-1 advantage in the 74th minute, a lead in which George Mason would not relinquish, handing ODU its first loss of the season.
Old Dominion will return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 6, when the Monarchs welcome VCU to the ODU Soccer Complex for a 7:00 p.m. start. The match will air live on C-USA TV.
