NORFOLK, Va. - Kira Laurento gave Old Dominion University women's soccer a 1-0 lead over East Carolina six minutes in but the Pirates tied the score early in the second half and that was all the scoring in a 1-1 season-opening tie.
Just six minutes in, Emma Gervase tapped a pass to Laurento who blasted a shot off the finger tips of ECU goalie Melanie Stiles.
In the 14th minute, ECU's Kim Sanford earned a red card for taking down Iris Achterhof and the Pirates played a player down for the final 76 minutes.
In the 47th minute, ECU tied the score as Daria Draovitch lofted in a cross to Tori Riggs who lifted a header into the top corner of the goal to knot the score at one.
The Monarchs outshot ECU in overtime, 6-1, but only one shot was on net and that was stopped by Stiles.
For the game, the Monarchs led in shots 19-11, while the Pirates had more corner kicks, 7-3.
The Monarchs are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 19 against Mt. St. Mary's, beginning at 6 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
