IRVING, Texas -- Old Dominion golfer Chad Hess has been named one of 14 recipients of the Conference USA Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
This is the 10th year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
Hess graduated with a 3.82 GPA with a degree in interdisciplinary studies - teacher prep. He has also volunteered for such organizations as the Monarchs Champion Program and is a youth bible study leader and volunteer soccer coach.
A native of Orefield, Pennsylvania, Hess was also the male recipient of the Broderick Award, given to the best all-around student-athlete at ODU, and the C-USA Spirit of Service Award. He competed in all nine events during his senior campaign, with a score average of 74.0. Hess posted the best finish of his career at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, where he tied for second, finishing the tournament 7-under.
