UTSA scored four in the first, as Chris Estrada hit a three-run triple and added a run in the third for an early 5-0 lead.
The Roadrunners added five runs in the seventh before the Monarchs scored their first run of the game on a Tommy Bell sacrifice fly.
Dylan Rock went 4-for-5 for UTSA, while Ryan Stacy and Trent Bowles had three hits apiece. Matt Schwarz led ODU with two hits, including a double.
Luke Krantz suffered his first career loss, going three innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned.
ODU and UTSA continue the series tomorrow at 3 p.m.
