NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team improved to 2-0 for the spring season after defeating East Carolina by a 1-0 score at the ODU Soccer Complex.

The Pirates applied pressure in the opening 10-15 minutes, before the Monarchs settled down, began moving the ball and exerted more control on the game as time wore on.

In the 36th minute, a Kira Laurento cross was cleared out, before Carla Morich beat her defender to the ball, dribbled past another and took a shot from the top of the box, which beat the keeper towards the high, far post.

For the second straight match, Old Dominion’s defense hasn’t allowed a goal. ECU had two chances to score in the second half, but Erin Davidson made one breakaway save and one leaping save on a high shot just under the crossbar.

Goal Scoring Chances:
-Carla Morich had a shot go over the crossbar in the second half, very similar to the goal in the first half.
-Iris Achterhof picked off a stray back-pass in the 65th minute from ECU’s defender but the goalkeeper came flying out to beat her to the ball.
-In the 83rd minute, a left footed through ball from Morgan Hall drew out the ECU keeper. Under pressure from Kira Laurento, the goalkeeper misplayed the clearance. Iris Achterhof beat the defender to it and from almost the sideline, drove a shot that beat the keeper and hit the far post.

The Monarchs have now outscored their opponents 4-0 in the first two matches of the spring season.

Old Dominion will return to the pitch on Saturday, March 31, when the Monarchs travel to Richmond, Va. to take on the U of R Spiders for a noon start.
