RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team defeated VCU by a 3-0 score in the 2018 spring season opener.
“This was a very gritty and gutsy performance,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “Even though it finished 3-0 us, the match was much more even than the final score suggested.”
In the 14th minute, Demi Maris finished an assist from Morgan Hall off a corner kick taken by Iris Achterhof. Maris found the near post to give ODU a 1-0 lead.
Maris later sent a free kick to Kira Laurento in the 38th minute, in which Laurento controlled the ball, turned into the box and was fouled in the process. Achterhof would convert on the penalty kick to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
In the 44th minute, Carla Morich later chipped in a ball, which set up Achterhof for a shot that was blocked, but while attempting to shoot again off the rebound, Achterhof was fouled. Achterhof capitalized on her second penalty kick of the day to seal the deal on ODU’s 3-0 victory at VCU.
ODU goalkeeper Erin Davidson pitched a shutout, most notably coming up with a one-on-one save 11 minutes into the second half.
Old Dominion will return to the pitch for its second spring game on Sunday, March 25, when the Monarchs welcome East Carolina to the ODU Soccer Complex for a 3:00 p.m. start.
