NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion hosts VMI on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for the first-ever meeting between Monarch head coach Chris Finwood and his son and current VMI volunteer assistant, Grey Finwood.
Grey played first base at ODU from 2013 to 2017, before foregoing his redshirt senior season to join the Keydet coaching staff.
The Finwood connection is not the only link between the two schools.
Chris Finwood played his college ball at VMI in the late 80s, where he was an All-SoCon shortstop. He then went on to serve as the head coach for the Keydets from 1992 to 1994. VMI head coach Jonathan Hadra was a volunteer assistant for Finwood at WKU and the top Keydet assistant, Casey Dykes, played for Finwood at WKU and was ODU assistant coach Logan Robbins’ roommate.
The Monarchs (6-9) are 2-1 in midweek games this season with wins over Richmond and Norfolk State.
The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv featuring commentary from Doug Ripley and Tim Wentz.
This will be the 58th all-time between the Monarchs and VMI (8-6). ODU leads the all-time series, 45-12.
