CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team fell to Charlotte, 51-43, on Thursday evening at Halton Arena.

"We're not going to win games on the road if we are missing layups," said head coach Nikki McCray-Penson. "We missed 14 layups and that right there was the ballgame."

The Old Dominion (8-21, 6-9 C-USA) defense held Charlotte (13-15, 9-6 C-USA) to just 39 percent shooting, well below their season average. However, the Monarchs shot just 31 percent from the field as a team and 23 percent from beyond the arc.

Following a back-and-forth first half, the 49ers led 21-19 at the half.

After Charlotte extended its lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter, the Monarchs made a 6-0 run to cut the lead back to four. However, the 49ers answered with an 8-0 run of their own to seal the victory.

"We had to press a little bit and I thought we got a little tired," said McCray. "But, again, it's hard when you are getting to the basket, but not making those layups."

As a team, ODU was 11-of-25 on layups.

Odegua Oigbokie led ODU with 10 points. Ashley Jackson added eight points and eight rebounds.

The Monarchs have yet to officially clinch a berth in next week's Conference USA Tournament in Frisco, Texas.

ODU can clinch with a victory at Middle Tennessee in the regular saeason finale on Saturday or an FIU loss to either UTEP or Southern Miss this weekend.
