ATHENS, Ga. - Junior Ashley Brem won the 100 breaststroke for Old Dominion University women's swimming and diving Friday night at the Conference USA Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. The win is the first of the championships for the Monarchs as they glided into fifth place with one day left of competition.
Brem became the first Monarch to place on the podium this week, claiming a time of 1:00.75 to win the 100 breaststroke, outlasting Marie-Claire Schillinger of Rice by .14. It is the first career victory at the C-USA Championships for Brem, after finishing third in the 100 breaststroke last year, and second as a freshman. Her time was also an NCAA B-Cut time.
Jacklyn VandePoel and Elena Adcock added points for the Monarchs in the 100 backstroke, finishing in fith and sixth place, respectively. VandePoel just missed an NCAA B-Cut time, coming in at 55.36, while Adcock finished in 55.46.
ODU ended the night with a fourth place spot in the 400 medley relay, their best relay finish of the championship so far. The squad of VandePoel, Brem, Adcock and Nikia Campbell took a time of 3:45.77.
The meet concludes tomorrow with the prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
