NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (10-5-2, 7-2-0 C-USA) men’s soccer team topped South Carolina (6-9-2, 2-5-2 C-USA) in the C-USA quarterfinal on Wednesday night at the ODU Soccer Complex, 2-0. Goals by Tom Wustenberg and Jimmy Filerman in the second half propelled the Monarchs over the Gamecocks on a wet night.

The Monarchs and Gamecocks remained scoreless through the first half. Old Dominion took the advantage in shots, 7-3.

In the 49th minute, Tom Wustenberg scored his first career goal as a Monarch.

Not long after, off a clearance by South Carolina, Jimmy Filerman blasted one past the Gamecock goalkeeper to extend the Monarch lead, 2-0.

Mertcan Akar notched his seventh shutout, the most by a Monarch goalkeeper since 2012. Akar also tallied just one save during the win.

During the quarterfinal match, the Monarchs totaled 13 shots against the Gamecocks eight.

“It was in the back of our guys’ heads that we lost to that team two weeks ago. They wanted a little bit of revenge and they got that tonight,” explained head coach Alan Dawson.

Earlier in the season, on Oct. 29, the Monarchs fell to the Gamecocks, 3-2.
