“I thought we wrestled very hard today in a 17 team field that included three top 25 teams in No. 20 Princeton, No. 24 Purdue and No. 25 Navy.” explained head coach Steve Martin.
Individually, Michael McGee defeated No. 25 Elijah Oliver from Indiana, who is a two-time NCAA Qualifier. McGee also topped Devin Schroder of Purdue, 5-1. McGee then lost in the finals to NCAA qualifier and No. 14 Luke Welch of Purdue.
At 141, Alex Madrigal topped No. 9 Tyler Smith out of Bucknell in the semifinals by a 11-7 decision. Bucknell's Smith is a three-time NCAA Qualifier. Madrigal was stopped by NCAA Qualifier Nick Gill from Navy in the finals.
No. 19 Larry Early fell to Brown's two-time NCAA Qualifier, Justin Staudenmayer by a 3-2 decision, which was decided by Staudenmayer's riding time point.
Junior Seldon Wright topped two ranked wrestlers in No. 19 Tyrel White from Columbia and No. 20 Dylan Lyndy from Purdue. Wright lost a tough match in the semifinals match to No. 7 ranked Jadaen Bernstein of Navy 5-1.
Taking sixth at 133, Caleb Richardson went 4-2 on the day dropping his fifth place match to No. 17 Tutolo from Kent State.
Kenan Carter battled back at 149 to a fourth-place finish as he defeated Jacob Macalooly from Columbia University.
“All in all we were pleased, but this young team can get much better since two thirds of our roster is in their first or second year, we will be much better by the end of the year.”
Old Dominion gained more team points than No. 20 Princeton. The squad also defeated all of their opponents in the MAC that were competing at the Navy Classic.
"We were in first throughout the tournament but Navy passed us in the last round and so did Purdue in the final match of the tournament. Individually, we had several big wins. 125 pounder McGee continues to impress us every week as he had wins over nationally ranked opponents. Madrigal beat the No. 9 kid in the country, Larry Early lost on riding time in the finals but is improving each week. We had several other places like Caleb Richardson who just needs competition as he has not competed in a year and a half. Kenan Carter had a good tournament at 149 but can wrestle with the best with just a few corrections. Wright had a pair of top-20 wins and that is good for his confidence."
